How does renting a number work?
Create an account
An email address and a password. No ID document, no selfie, no phone number of your own.
Top up from $10 in crypto
Send BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, SOL or LTC to the address shown for your top-up. Your balance is credited once the network confirms the payment.
Choose a country and a period
Pick one of the countries in stock and 7, 30 or 90 days. The price is taken from your balance and the number appears in your dashboard.
Read your SMS and renew
Texts sent to the number are listed in your dashboard. Renew before the end date if you want to keep the same number.
The how it works page covers each step, the payment confirmation and what happens at the end of a rental.
Why rent a number for weeks instead of a one-time code?
A one-time SMS number usually lives for minutes. 5SIM, for example, says its numbers last 10 to 20 minutes and that longer use is "currently unavailable". That is enough for one code, but the account you open keeps the number on file. When the service texts you again, for a new device, a password reset or a routine check, a one-time number is gone.
A rented number stays yours for the whole period, so later texts still reach you. For an account you plan to keep, rent for 30 or 90 days, set up a second way to log in, and renew the number or replace it on the account before the rental ends. The long-term virtual number guide explains the trade-offs.
What do people rent a number for?
- Keep your own number private
Give a rented number to shops, sites and classifieds instead of your personal one.
- Living or travelling abroad
Receive texts on a number from the country you deal with, while you live somewhere else.
- Testing an app
Check that your own sign-up or alert SMS really arrives on a real number in another country.
- Work and personal life apart
A separate number for a side project, a listing or a client, for exactly as long as you need it.
What can a rented number not do?
- It receives SMS only. It does not make or take calls and cannot send texts.
- Some services refuse virtual numbers, and their rules change. We cannot promise that a given service will accept a number; the guide on refused numbers explains why.
- Some public services only text local numbers registered in your name. GOV.UK One Login, for example, says it cannot send a security code by text to a phone number registered outside the UK.
- When a rental ends and is not renewed, the number can later be given to someone else. Move important accounts to another number before that date.

Questions before you rent
Is KeepANumber a real phone number or an app?
It is a phone number from the country you choose, rented to you for a fixed period. You read its SMS on our website; there is no app to install and no SIM card.
Do I need to show an ID?
No. No KYC: no ID upload, no selfie, no documents. You sign up with an email and a password and pay in crypto. The no-KYC page lists what we keep and what we do not ask for.
Can I keep the same number after 30 days?
Yes, if you renew before the end date. Renewal adds another 7, 30 or 90 days to the same number. After the end date the number is no longer reserved for you.
Which countries can I choose?
14 countries have their own page, from the United States and the United Kingdom to Australia and Brazil. The checkout shows which ones are in stock right now.
What if a service does not send its SMS to my number?
Contact support with the rental reference. We check the number and handle the case under the refund policy. We cannot make a third-party service accept a number it refuses.
